From Passprt Community
- Start early from Leh to cross Khardung La while roads are quieter and save time and energy.
- Carry enough cash as ATMs are unreliable beyond Diskit and network is mostly down post Khardung La.
- The road from Nubra to Turtuk is scenic but tiring so plan a rest stop in Hunder or Sumur if allowed by time limits.
- Turtuk charms with cozy Balti village vibes and apricot orchards but has limited food options compared to Nubra.
- Siachen Base Camp makes a thrilling day trip though altitude and military zones may restrict photography and movement.
- Best photo spots are the Diskit monastery lookout, Hunder sand dunes at sunset and the green Turtuk lanes.
- Staying in Hunder gives comfort and easy access but homestays in Turtuk offer heartwarming authenticity.
- Fuel up in Leh as pumps in Diskit or near Khalsar may not work reliably so carry extra if self‑driving or riding.
