- Go surfing between 6:00 am and 9:00 am; the waves are cleaner and the beach is much quieter before the crowds roll in.
- The black volcanic sand gets scorching hot after midday - don’t walk barefoot or you’ll burn your feet.
- Swimming here isn’t ideal; the currents are strong and the reef is sharp, so it’s best suited for experienced surfers.
- Reef booties are worth packing - many travelers cut their feet on shallow reef when entering the water.
- Don’t rely on cards - bring cash for the few local stalls and surf camps, as ATMs are limited in the area.
- Sunsets against the black sand are striking - bring your camera and head to the shoreline around 5:30 pm for the best photos.
