The Seats of Power Tour

A four-hour tour that takes you to the two competing seats of power in Hyderabad. The Nizam’s dominions, or Hyderabad State, was a vassal to the British throne from 1798 onwards. This meant there were two centers of power. One was the palace of the Nizam, the absolute monarch of his domains. The other was the Residency, the palace of the Resident – the representative of the British monarch.
In this tour, we visit two of Hyderabad’s best preserved buildings from the Asaf Jahi period (1724 to 1948CE). The Chowmahalla Palace is a splendid testament to the wealth and grandeur of the Nizam of Hyderabad. The British Residency, while the seat of power of the British in Hyderabad, also has a tale of an officer of the British crown ‘going native’, marrying a local noblewoman and building the Residency as a grand house for them to live in together.
