The Sri Ramalingeswara Swamy Temple at Keesaragutta, also known as Kesaragiri Kshetram, holds profound historical and mythological significance. Located about 30 kilometers from Hyderabad, this ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is a revered site for devotees. Its historical importance is intertwined with the Ramayana and local lore.

Mythological Significance

Connection with Lord Rama:According to legend, after defeating Ravana in Lanka, Lord Rama sought to atone for the sin of killing a Brahmin (Brahmahatya), as Ravana was a Brahmin by birth. On the advice of sages, Rama decided to install a Shiva Lingam and worship Lord Shiva for forgiveness.

Rama chose the picturesque location of Keesaragutta for the installation of the Lingam. He instructed Lord Hanuman to bring a Lingam from Varanasi. However, as Hanuman was delayed, Lord Shiva himself appeared before Rama and blessed him with a self-manifested Lingam (Swayambhu Lingam) for worship.

Legend of the Lingams:When Hanuman arrived with multiple Lingams, he was disappointed to find that Rama had already installed the Swayambhu Lingam. To console Hanuman, Rama allowed the other Lingams to be installed nearby. Today, devotees can see several Lingams scattered around the temple complex, believed to be brought by Hanuman.
